Douglas International Port Authority and Border Safety

In light of the violence occurring along the U.S.-Mexico border region, specifically in Mexico, Agua Prieta Sonora, Mexico, sister city to Douglas, Arizona has remained one of the safest cities in Mexico to do business.

Agua Prieta, Mexico, unlike other Mexican border cities has yet to be included in any of the U.S. State Department Travel Alerts and/or the Overseas Security Advisory Council which provides regular and timely interchange of information between the Private Sector and the State Department concerning developments in overseas security environment.

For more than three decades Agua Prieta has been an inviting site for investment. Located in southeast Arizona and northeast Sonora, major corporations like Takata, Newell Rubbermaid, Velcro, Monona Wire Corporation and 10 other major U.S. corporations have chosen the region for its available and reliable workforce, education system, market access, buyer/supplier network, minimal commercial border wait times and border security/safety.

Most recently Alstyle Apparel, one of the largest manufacturers of blank t-shirts, made a total capital investment of $40 million that included the construction of a 700,000 square foot manufacturing plant. The significant investment of Alstyle Apparel, one of the largest to date in the State of Sonora, is testimony of the Agua Prieta’s competitive advantage in comparison to Nogales and other border regions.
